FAQ

1. What qualities does liquid nitrogen have?

Nitrogen gas is referred to as liquid nitrogen. As is well known, the majority of the atmosphere is composed of nitrogen (78.03% by volume and 75.5% by weight). Nitrogen has a boiling point of -196.56 oC under normal pressure and can expand to a volume of 696 cubic meters of pure gaseous nitrogen (21 oC) from 1 cubic meter of liquid nitrogen. Liquid nitrogen may be produced at higher temperatures if it is compressed. Due to excessive heat absorption during vaporization, liquid nitrogen, as an inert, colorless, odorless, non-corrosive, non-flammable substance with an extremely low boiling point, can result in frostbite.

2. What functions does liquid nitrogen serve?

Liquid nitrogen is being used more and more frequently these days, which is really convenient for us. When liquid nitrogen was first employed, it was primarily for freezing treatments in industrial production. However, these days, liquid nitrogen is being used for freezing and cooling in a growing number of fields.Liquid nitrogen has a chemical reaction with deep refrigerants in industrial production. It can be used for biological tissues and instantly freeze them without endangering biological activity because of its chemical inertness.Rapid freezing can be used in surgery to help halt bleeding and remove superficial skin surface areas that need to be removed, as well as in medicine to preserve living tissues and store biological samples.

3, Safety precautions for liquid nitrogen 

(1) Liquid nitrogen is an extremely cold liquid(-196 ºC)that, if splashed on skin, can result in frostbite similar to burns. Consequently, extra care should be taken when adding and taking away liquid nitrogen;   
(2) Do not use sealed plugs in place of the designated tank cover to prevent damage to the container from the continuous evaporation of liquid nitrogen and the resulting increase in nitrogen pressure;   
(3) A useful plastic or solid wooden rod should be inserted into the bottom of the container to measure the height of the liquid level inside, and it should be removed after 5 to 10 seconds. The height of the liquid level determines the length of frost formation;  

(4)Windows should be left open in spaces where liquid nitrogen is kept for an extended period of time for ventilation.

4, How to deal with liquid nitrogen frostbite ? 

(1) When we are frostbitten by liquid nitrogen, we must stay calm and immediately stay away from the site of the accident to avoid secondary frostbite. If the frostbite is not very serious, we can simply treat the wound or find some ointment to wipe it.
(2) We should seek medical attention right away in cases of severe liquid nitrogen injury, such as skin ulceration or skin color change.
(3) The wound from a liquid nitrogen frostbite is likely to become infected, so avoid eating foods that are too spicy or the wound will heal slowly. You should also be mindful of the hygiene around the wound surface.
