Liquid Nitrogen: Properties, Grades, and Applications
Liquid nitrogen (LN2) is a cryogenic liquid with a boiling point of -196 ºC, derived from nitrogen-an element comprising over 70% of Earth's atmosphere. As an inert, colorless, non-toxic, and volatile substance, LN2 exhibits unique physical properties that enable its diverse applications. Due to its high volatility at ambient temperatures, LN2 is stored in specialized insulated containers known as liquid nitrogen tanks.
Grades and Purity
Liquid nitrogen is categorized by purity into two primary grades:
- Food Grade: Designed for direct contact with consumables, this grade meets stringent safety standards with a purity level of 99.999% (5N), ensuring compliance with food safety regulations.
- Industrial Grade: Primarily used for non-consumable applications, its purity is lower than food grade but still suitable for most industrial processes.
Safety Considerations
Despite misconceptions about safety risks, LN2 is inherently safe when handled properly. Upon exposure to air, it rapidly vaporizes into nitrogen gas, which is non-reactive and non-toxic. However, standard safety protocols must be observed, including proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and ventilation, as with any industrial fluid.
Technical Specifications
Production & Storage:
- Production Capacity: 1-50 L/h
- Storage Volume: 120 L
- Operational Temperature: 10 ºC-38 ºC
Control & Power:
- Control System: PLC touch screen interface
- Power Supply: 200-400V, 3-phase, 50/60Hz
Applications
In industrial settings, LN2 is produced via fractional distillation of compressed liquid air. Its chemical inertness and ultra-low temperature make it ideal for:
-
Food Industry:
- Rapid freezing and cold-chain transportation of perishable goods
- Production of artisanal ice creams and frozen desserts
-
Biomedical Sciences:
- Cryopreservation of biological samples (sperm, eggs, stem cells) at ultra-low temperatures to maintain viability
- Cryosurgery for tissue ablation
-
Scientific Research:
- Low-temperature physics experiments
- Demonstrations in educational settings (e.g., brittle fracture of materials at cryogenic temperatures)
-
Industrial & Technical Applications:
- Cooling in high-temperature superconductor research
- Freezing of tunnels and pipelines for maintenance
- Nitrogen supply in fertilizer production and chemical analysis
- Cryogenic grinding in pharmaceuticals and materials science
- Annealing and hardening processes in glass and metal industries
-
Beverage & Seafood Industries:
- Carbonation and rapid chilling in craft beverages
- Flash freezing of seafood to preserve texture and freshness

Liquid Nitrogen Liquefaction
A Liquid Nitrogen Plant (LNP) extracts nitrogen gas from atmospheric air and converts it into liquid nitrogen using cryogenic cooling technology. This process involves two primary methods for nitrogen liquefaction:
- Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) with Cryogenic Generator:
Utilizes molecular sieves to separate nitrogen from air prior to cryogenic cooling.
- Liquid Air Distillation:
Involves fractional distillation of liquefied air to isolate nitrogen based on its boiling point.
Working Principle of Liquid Nitrogen Plant
-
Air Compression:
Atmospheric air is compressed to 7 bar in a multi-stage compressor, generating high-temperature compressed air.
-
Heat Exchange & Moisture Removal:
The heated compressed air is cooled via an external refrigeration system, then passed through a moisture separator to eliminate water vapor, ensuring dry air feedstock.
-
Gas Separation:
The dried air is directed through a bed of carbon molecular sieves (CMS), which selectively adsorb oxygen and other trace gases, allowing purified nitrogen gas (≥99% purity) to pass through.
-
Cryogenic Liquefaction:
The separated nitrogen gas is cooled in a cryogenic cooler to its boiling point (77.2 K), causing it to liquefy. This phase change is achieved through continuous heat removal in a closed-loop cooling system.
-
Storage:
Liquid nitrogen is collected and stored in vacuum-insulated Dewar vessels, designed to maintain cryogenic temperatures for extended periods, facilitating its use in various industrial applications.
Key Improvements:
- Structured Hierarchy: Separated into method categories and step-by-step workflow with numbered sequences.
- Technical Precision: Replaced ambiguous terms (e.g., "Cryo cooler" → "cryogenic cooler") and specified purity levels.
- Process Clarity: Eliminated redundant descriptions (e.g., "trapping moisture" → "eliminating water vapor") and emphasized thermodynamic principles (boiling point, heat removal).
- Industry Standards: Used PSA as the standard abbreviation for pressure swing adsorption and clarified CMS functionality.
