Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) is an advanced gas separation technology that developed rapidly overseas in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Its core principle relies on the differential "adsorption" performance of molecular sieves toward different gas molecules to separate gas mixtures. Using air as the raw material, PSA achieves nitrogen-oxygen separation through the selective adsorption of nitrogen and oxygen by highly efficient, highly selective solid adsorbents.

In current nitrogen and oxygen production, carbon molecular sieves (CMS) and zeolite molecular sieves (ZMS) are the most commonly used adsorbents. Their separation of oxygen and nitrogen is primarily based on the differing diffusion rates of the two gases on the sieve surface. CMS, a carbon-based adsorbent combining properties of activated carbon and molecular sieves, features tiny micropores (0.3-1nm in diameter). Oxygen, with a smaller molecular diameter, diffuses faster and more deeply into the sieve's solid phase, leaving nitrogen enriched in the gas phase. Once the sieve reaches adsorption equilibrium for oxygen, regeneration is performed by reducing pressure-leveraging CMS's pressure-dependent adsorption characteristics to desorb the adsorbed oxygen. PSA systems typically use two parallel towers, alternating between pressurized adsorption and depressurized regeneration to ensure a continuous nitrogen flow.

Referred to as PSA nitrogen generation, this technology-using air as raw material, CMS as adsorbent, and PSA principles for selective nitrogen-oxygen adsorption-emerged as a rapidly developing nitrogen production method in the 1970s. Compared to traditional nitrogen generation methods, it offers distinct advantages: simple processes, high automation, rapid gas production (15-30 minutes), low energy consumption, adjustable product purity over a broad range per user requirements, easy operation and maintenance, low operating costs, and strong device adaptability. Particularly competitive in nitrogen generators with a capacity below 1,000 Nm³/h, PSA has gained widespread acceptance among small and medium-sized nitrogen users, becoming their preferred choice.
